Thai Herbal Compress Massage

Performed for hundreds of years, Herbal Massage is known to provide deep relaxation while relieving stress and fatigue, improving health. The therapy relies on the use of hot compresses or "poultices" filled with a selection of herbs and spices. The compresses, generally wet and then steamed, are gently applied to specific points of the body releasing their healing benefits into the pores of the skin. They can be combined with the use of hands to focus the massage on  the body's knots. Hot herbal compresses are frequently used in Thailand in conjunction with traditional massage. Hot compresses are used to address chronic problems, such as back pain and tendonitis, as well as to increase energy flow, improve circulation, relax muscles and stimulate nerves. Hot compresses provide the same type of stimulation as acupressure, and are used to stimulate tender or sensitive areas that cannot be massaged directly; for example, the back may be too painful for direct acupressure, but hot herbal compresses on the same points will provide similar benefits. Typically, a Thai massage therapist will not only place a compress to the area of injury or disorder, but will also work on acupressure points throughout the body to stimulate and relax the client, and to promote the body's natural processes. Typically a Thai herbal ball (HB) contains specific Southeast Asian herbs such as tamarind, kaffir leaves, lemongrass, shikakai, mangosteen, ginger, and many other ingredients. However, the ingredients for this pressing herbal sphere may differ in different parts of the world. The herbal qualities are carefully selected so that they blend well together and form a therapeutic mix that will benefit the specific ailments and complaints of the person being massaged.
